Green Utopia – Made in Green Tech Valley
Addressing the climate crisis requires swift action and innovative thinking. As part of the Green Utopia – Made in Green Tech Valley initiative, students from regional colleges created visionary short films, eight of which were showcased at the former Hornig Area during Graz Design Month 2024. Our team contributed a video imagining a future where cyanobacteria replace chemical processes with organic ones to create a greener planet.

Background
“In our utopia, genetically optimized cyanobacteria are used on a large scale to catalyze a variety of chemical reactions in a way that is both economically viable and is also ecologically sustainable. They enable the production of pharmaceuticals, plastics and many other important chemicals without the environmentally harmful side effects associated with traditional methods.” – Peter Erlsbacher
Collaboration
Our team (PhD student Peter Erlsbacher, media designer Anna-Katharina Hammerer, and communication designers Tea Mauko and Sofie Neudecker) personified cyanobacteria as industrial workers to showcase their benefits in an engaging, accessible way.
Design Choices
Each team used a collage style with colorful backgrounds. To counter the usual association of bacteria with illness, we highlighted their benefits by humanizing them as factory workers. Bright colors and floral elements emphasized the sustainable utopia we envisioned.
